Packing a school lunch box is something most parents do every day, but for families managing food allergies, it comes with an extra layer of planning, label reading, and preparation.
Questions like "Will this be safe?", "Will my child actually eat it?" and "Will they feel included with their friends?" become part of the daily routine.
At Charlie's Safe Treat Box, we understand because we're a food allergy family too. Our founder, Sharon, has spent more than 14 years packing allergy-friendly lunch boxes for Charlie, who has lived with multiple food allergies.
The good news? A safe lunch box can still be colourful, nutritious, delicious, and fun.
Here's our guide to creating an allergy-friendly lunchbox your child will look forward to opening every day.
What Makes a Great Allergy Friendly Lunch Box?
Every child is different, and every family manages different food allergies. However, a great lunch box usually includes a balance of:
💜 Fresh fruit
💜 Vegetables
💜 Homemade snacks
💜 A filling main meal
💜 Convenient pre-packaged snacks
💜 A small treat to make lunchtime exciting
As children grow, their preferences change too. What worked in Prep may not be what they want in high school, so don't be afraid to adapt as they get older.
Fresh Lunch Box Ideas
Fresh fruit and vegetables are usually allergy-friendly for many families (though some people can be allergic to certain fruits or vegetables) and provide colour, crunch, and variety.
Ideas include:
-
Apple slices (soak in salted water for a couple of minutes to prevent browning)
-
Grapes
-
Strawberries
-
Blueberries
-
Watermelon
-
Mandarin or orange segments
-
Pear slices
-
Cucumber sticks
-
Carrot sticks
-
Capsicum strips
- Snow peas or green beans
-
Cherry tomatoes
-
Corn on the cob cut into smaller portions
-
Avocado slices with lemon juice and salt
Adding fresh fruit and vegetables each day helps create a balanced lunch while keeping things interesting.
Filling Main Meal Ideas
Children need enough food to keep them energised throughout the school day.
Some family favourites include:
-
Homemade rice paper rolls
-
Sushi using safe ingredients
-
Leftover bolognese sauce with rice or safe pasta in a thermos
-
Stir fry leftovers
-
Fried rice (no egg)
-
Homemade pizza using allergy-friendly ingredients
-
Soup in a thermos during winter
-
Rice with chicken and vegetables
-
Homemade salads
-
Leftover roasted vegetables
Using leftovers from dinner can save time while providing a nutritious lunch, and kids will remember it was safe to eat at home if they have anxiety eating food at school.

Lunch Boxes Change as Children Grow
One thing we've learnt over the years is that lunch boxes evolve.
When Charlie was in primary school, his lunch box was filled with fruit, vegetables, homemade muffins, leftovers, rice crackers, and lots of homemade snacks. We would use crinkle cutters for cutting fruit and vegetables, fun-shaped sandwich cutters and animal-themed food picks for eating food and a mix of snack boxes such as those from the Melii lunchware and accessories brand.
Now he's in high school, things have changed.
Teenagers often prefer foods that feel a little more "grown up".
Large insulated food jars, homemade slices, muffins, cookies, pre-packaged snacks, and individual containers of leftovers are often more appealing than a traditional lunch box.
Having safe snacks that children feel confident eating around their friends can make a big difference to their independence and confidence.
Tips for Packing Allergy-Friendly Lunch Boxes
Here are a few tips we've learnt over the years:
✔ Prepare snacks in batches and freeze them.
✔ Rotate snacks regularly to avoid lunch box boredom.
✔ Let children help choose what goes into their lunch.
✔ Keep a stash of trusted pre-packaged snacks for busy mornings or after-school activities.
✔ Always read ingredient labels every time you buy a product, even if you've purchased it before.
✔ Encourage older children to become involved in choosing and packing their own safe foods.
